The Sentinel Series
The Sentinel Series explores the enduring presence of a solitary Monterey Cypress standing against the shifting forces of nature. Perched on a rugged cliff above the sea, the wind-shaped sentinel becomes both subject and symbol—an observer of storms, light, and time itself.
Inspired by the Romantic landscape tradition of Caspar David Friedrich, the works reflect the idea that nature can carry emotional and philosophical meaning beyond the landscape itself. A single tree, bent by years of ocean wind, stands at the edge of sea and sky as both witness and survivor.
Across the series, the viewer encounters four moments in the life of The Sentinel:
• Approaching Storm – the rising tension before the sky breaks
• The Tempest – the full force of wind and lightning against the coast
• After the Gale – the return of light and the quiet resilience that follows
• The Last Watch – a final stillness beneath the moon, where the sentinel stands in silence after a lifetime of storms
Together the works form a narrative cycle of anticipation, conflict, endurance, and reflection, echoing the Romantic tradition in which solitary elements of nature become meditations on time and human experience.
Each piece is produced as a museum-quality giclée print using archival fine art paper and pigment inks designed to resist fading for generations. Select works are also available as Tzhon Atelier editions, presented at larger scale and released in strictly limited numbers for collectors.
The Sentinel Series marks one of the foundational collections of the Tzhon studio, beginning with The Tempest, the work that first defined the vision of the gallery.
