ABOUT THE ARTIST — TZHON

 

Art, for me, has never been separate from space.

I began studying art in the early 1990s, drawn especially to the physicality of paint—the weight of pigment, the movement of the brush, and the way texture carries emotion across a surface. Classical oil painting, particularly impasto techniques, left a lasting impression: art was not just something to see, but something to feel.

That influence remains central to my work today.

My process begins with observation—often something simple: a color, a natural form, a moment of contrast. Growing up along the Gulf Coast, I continue to draw inspiration from its landscape, its atmosphere, and its culture—its food, its textures, and its sense of lived experience. Many pieces begin there, but rarely end where they start.

Each work evolves through multiple passes. I build, step away, and return—sometimes repeatedly—until the composition, movement, and emotional weight align. The process is not linear. It requires distance, revision, and restraint. In many cases, pieces are abandoned entirely if they fail to carry the presence I am looking for.

What defines my work is not just how it appears, but how it lives in a space.

I am particularly interested in scale—how a piece interacts with architecture, how it anchors a room, and how it changes the way people experience an environment. This has led me toward larger formats, including oversized works and multi-panel compositions designed specifically for interior placement.

Texture remains essential. Even when working through contemporary methods, I approach each piece with the sensibility of a painter—seeking depth, variation, and the subtle irregularities that give a work its sense of life. The goal is always the same: to create something that carries the visual and emotional presence of paint.

The majority of my work never reaches the gallery. It exists as part of an ongoing exploration—an attempt to realize something fully formed in the mind. Only those pieces that achieve that standard, both visually and emotionally, are released.

Tzhon Gallery offers my selected collection of those works, often depicted in rooms they were designed for.

Each piece is created with the intention that it will not simply decorate a wall, but define the space around it.

The Editions

Tzhon Studio produces both open collections and limited-edition works.

Limited editions are released in small numbers and produced at museum scale. Each piece is printed using archival materials designed to preserve color and detail for generations.

The studio’s goal is simple: to create art that feels considered, enduring, and deeply integrated with the spaces people inhabit.

 

The Brand

The name Tzhon is derived from a childhood nickname—a phonetic rendering of “petit Jean,” or “little John.”

It remains as a quiet signature: a connection to origin, carried forward into the work, and a reminder of spaces that inspired me.
