In The Gathering Storm, a solitary coastal Monterey Cypress leans into the rising wind as clouds assemble across the horizon. The sea churns below the cliffside, and the sky glows with the final light before the weather turns. It is a moment suspended between calm and upheaval—the quiet tension that precedes the full force of the storm.

The work draws from the Romantic landscape tradition, where nature serves as a vessel for human emotion. The wind-shaped Sentinel echoes the symbolic trees found in the landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich, where solitary forms stand against vast skies and distant seas. In the shifting atmosphere and gathering clouds, the painting also recalls the expressive weather studies of John Constable, whose storm paintings captured the emotional weight carried within the sky itself.

Here, the tree becomes a sentinel—rooted in stone yet bent by wind, enduring the unseen power that approaches from beyond the horizon. The storm has not yet arrived, but the landscape already feels its presence.

Within the Sentinel Series, The Gathering Storm represents the opening movement of the narrative. It precedes the violence of The Tempest, the central and founding work of the series, and marks the moment when nature begins to shift from tranquility to sublime power.
